Sharing Photos - Things to consider
When sharing your photos online, there are several things that you need to consider when you either email photos or share them on a web site.
Keep the image small. A high resolution 3.2 megapixel photo is roughly 2048x1536 pixels. This means that the image is over 2000 pixels wide and over 1500 pixels high. Let alone the file size of this image, this is about twice as large as most people's monitor settings. Don't send a file that's this big, resize it to anywhere between 640x480 to 1280x960 pixels. The smaller the better, on a monitor it will still be a clear image.
Use JPEG format. JPEG is a universal file format that most computers have a file reader for, also, JPEG does an excellent job compressing the size of your files.
Size matters. The size of the file really matters. Most email systems restrict the size of file attachments. A file that's larger than 500KB won't get through many email systems.
Size matters 2. If you are emailing photos and the recipient uses a modem to connect to the internet, limit the image size to 640x480, this will keep the image small enough and compress it to betwen 100 and 150KB, which is a managable download size.
Attachments. Limit the number of attachments to 1. Many email systems (like old-AOL) don't allow multiple email attachments.
You need to consider all of the items above for both email as well as web sharing. When you share on the web using something like MyPhotoBuddy or pBase, most of these considerations are taken care of so you don't need to worry. When you share your photos with people via a web service, all you will ever need to email to friends and family is a very simple URL, like www.onlinereviewgallery.com or http://onlinereviewgallery.com/view_album.php?set_albumName=FirstSample.
