Olympus DP30 Cooled Monochrome CCD Microscope Camera Offers High Sensitivity, Low-Noise Results

Olympus today introduced the new DP30 high-sensitivity cooled monochrome CCD camera, which is designed for a broad range of low-light microscope imaging applications. The camera offers flexibility and delivers superior images with its high-speed, full resolution live preview; vibration-free performance and superb 12-bit low noise images.

The DP30 was developed for demanding fluorescence microscopy applications. Its fast live preview rate facilitates focusing (15 frames per second at 1360 x 1024 pixels for 8-bit images) while minimizing specimen exposure to excitation light. With the camera's three user-selectable CCD sensitivities, users can collect images over a wide range of wavelengths, from visible to near-infrared light. Its rapid display rates, high sensitivity and superior image quality make it ideal for imaging even the most weakly fluorescing specimens.

The DP30 provides superb low-noise images with outstanding clarity and detail. Its exceptionally low noise levels are achieved with improved Peltier cooling and a photoelectric transfer circuit, regulated to 5 degrees Celsius. In addition, an optional background subtraction feature reduces noise resulting from dark current effects due to long exposures. Since its cooling system is fanless, it generates neither vibration nor sound and is ideal for techniques that require extraordinary stability.

Developed by Olympus, the fully featured DP30 camera control software has an easy-to-use, customizable graphic user interface to streamline workflow. Included in the program is an image management interface so the user can drag and drop stored images displayed as thumbnails for viewing. In addition, a six-channel image merging function allows fluorescence and DIC combinations to be pseudocolored and merged into one multi-color image.

With the DP30 camera, researchers can record image files in multiple formats -- single image, a sequence of time-lapse images, AVI, or MPEG-1.
