Nikon to Boost Digital SLR Production
Nikon announced on June 15th that it will boost production capacity for its digital SLR cameras. This is a strategy that will eventually have the company exit the compact film camera market.
In an interview with Reuters, the managing director of Nikon Japan inicated that production on the D70 model would be increased to 90-100,000 units per month from the current 70,000. Nikon followed 6 months behind Canon in the 'inexpensive' digital SLR market with the introduction of the D70. In fiscal 2003/04, Nikon sold about 300,000 DSLRs and expects an increase to a million units in the fiscal year ending March, 2005.
